first day at work was a blast. I think I can really get into this. It's a lot of running around like a chicken with it's head cut off but that's how I like it...besides, that really only happens on mondays and tuesdays. The rest of the week is a lot of hurry up and wait. You see, here's the way it goes....
The shows we are working on are students thesis projects. They either act or direct to get their masters. So every week we do atleast three shows, sometimes four. On mondays and tuesdays we tech the three shows for the week. For the non theatre folk this means we take all the elements of the show and slap em together to get the end product and we rehearse and rehearse until we get it right. The actors and director have been working for some time away from the theatre rehearsing their blocking (blocking is the set paths where the actors stand and move around on the stage) and their lines. They come to the theatre and we make the rest of it happen, the set, lights, sound, props, costumes and so on. So in other words, monday and tuesday equals crunch time. We figure out where all the props lay out, fix anything that needs fixing on the sets, repair rips in costumes and sychronize all the set changes so they look nice and are done quickly, etc. The rest of the week the shows are performed for an audience. Wed-Sat that is. Then saturday nite we strike those shows and start all over again with new shows on monday.
I love it. It really keeps you on your toes and I also get to meet a ton of new people every week which is always great.
Day number 2, here I come.
