okay, after a full day of recovery from saturday nite, I think Im ready to do a little typing. First off, today is my first day at the new job! weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. It's about damn time eh? I wont normally be up this early, but being the first day and all, gotta be in by 10...opposed to the usual nooner.
Okay, saturday nite. The UKUK show. First let me tell you that UKUK is my brother's band and he's the front man. He's had about a zillion and one bands in the past, but this seems to be the first one that he's really pushing for. They're getting real gigs and they've got a nice new sound. Atleast to me they do. They're cd is one I actually put in my player for some leisurely listening. Okay, it's some pretty heavy duty listening so I guess it's not really "leisurely", more like, put it on and dance around. But regardless, I enjoy listening to them and that's the point. *the coffee is bound to hit me soon and I may begin to make some sense*
My brother. He's 6 foot something, thin and has firey red hair...the bastard. When you meet him off the stage, he's quiet, reserved and relaxed. Same goes for most of his band mates too. All of them are friends from up-state where we're from.
So the nite started off a little on the late side. The show started at 11pm and we didnt leave the house (did I mention I live with my brother? yes, we get along very well) until around 930. Let me remind you that we had to get to the way west side o' manhattan from here in brooklyn which is easily a 45 minute trip. Myself and the boy, my brother and his lady, all hopped on the 2/3 train that decided to go local when it was supposed to go express which put a little extra hop in our step. When we finally did get to our stop, the boy and myself had to stop at an atm so we told the other two to go ahead of us. The ATM thing was rather amusing. If you know NYC, you know there's an ATM on every damn block. And yet somehow, we couldnt seem to find one that was functioning. We stopped at, I believe, 5 ATMs before we were able to actually get any cash. At this point, the brother was long gone. So the boy and I went searching on our own for the club....and of course, it was about 4 blocks south of where we initially thought it would be which made me, the sister, a little ancy about other people finding it.. You see, if they got a certain number of people to come see their show, they could have made a profit.
We FINALLY arrive at the place. I dont think Ive been in a smaller bar. When I say packed like sardines....well, it's no exageration. Luckily there was a downstairs where the music was taking place but we werent allowed to go there just yet. So, myself and the boy ordered a couple beers (corona for me, bud for him) and hung out at the bar. Of course hung out at the bar means we were still wearing our jackets and getting pushed into the wooden railing due to the lack of room. Eventually, my brother emerged from the downstairs mystery room saying that the asswipes at the bar had double booked. Another band was supposedly going to play from 1030pm to 4am. "What kind of band?" I asked. "A cover band" he responded. Much eye rolling followed. Anyhow, the other band said they would "let" UKUK take the stage for a half an hour, so that worked out.
Let me cut to the show. The downstairs mystery room was no different from the upstairs non-mystery room. Just as cramped but with benches instead of tables and chairs. I can dig it. UKUK took the stage and it was incredible. Ive never seen my brother take on such an amazing transformation. His incredible blue eyes seered into the audience as he screamed and rang his cow bell with fury. He told the audience things we never heard before and we all obeyed and felt safe in the arms of UKUK. After all they arent terrorists, they just sing about them! The guitarists jumped and danced with every note, nearly knocking over the stacks (stacks being towers of speakers and amps by the way). The audience was going nuts for them, I even peeked around the room to see if people who weren't friends of the band were nodding with appreciation, and sure enough, they were. They played about 6 or 7 songs, who's keeping count and each one was more full of energy than the last. Our eardrums were ringing with the sounds of UKUK and we were compelled to bang our heads in a front to back motion. Gypsy Mazurko, my brother, announced the members of the band and we all made our choices as to who our crushes would be when they got big and famous.
The show was far more than I had expected of them, being so fresh on the scene and all. Their presence was as if they had been doing it for years and I was more than impressed. The great thing about it is, Im not just saying this because he is my brother. I genuinely dig this band and have plans to get them as many gigs as possible in the future. After all, I was an arts management major.
If you're curious to hear these guys you can check them out here. We would also be more than happy to send you a demo if you so desire. Just email me with an address and we'll get you one as soon as possible. Donations would be much obliged but not neccessary. At this point we just want to get the point across and get people listening to the music.
Off to work. what is this time called 8am?
